Sporadic high mortalities were reported in June 1997 among hatchery-reared larval Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in a French commercial hatchery. Cellular abnormalities were observed in semi-thin sections in affected animals. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of herpes-like virus particles in larvae. This is the first description of a herpes-like virus infection in larval R. philippinarum, a non-ostreid bivalve species. Virus particles were similar to other herpes-like viruses described from different oyster species with respect to ultrastructure and morphogenesis. Several herpes-like virus infections have been reported since 1991 among different bivalve species around the world (Nicolas et al., 1992; Comps and Cochennec, 1993; Renault et al., 1994; Hine and Thome, 1997; Hine 1997). To date, detection of these infections has been strongly correlated with severe losses of oyster larvae and spat. The virus infections are currently diagnosed by laborious histologicai and transmission electron microscopical examinations. These techniques, however, facilitate neither rapid diagnosis nor the ability to analyse large sample numbers. |

Little information is available on viral infections that affect bivalve molluscs. Such a lack of data is due ta a certain inadequacy of the diagnosis methods that are employed when massive mortality events occur. Most laboratories involved in mollusc pathology still analyse samples through light microscopy. World-wide, there is thus currently a lack of information concerning the occurrence of bivalve herpesvituses. This is probably due to the lack of suitable diagnostic tools. The basic method for identification and examination of suspect samples is predominantly histopathology. Since 1972, herpes-like virus infections have been reported in several marine bivalve species around the world. Viral detection was often associated with high mortality rates in larvae and spat. To determine whether a single virus is able to infect different bivalve host species, we carried out experimental transmission assays. As a first step, 8 assays were performed to infect axenic Crassostrea gigas larvae with virus from infected C. gigas larvae using a previously described protocol. A herpes-like virus which was associated with mortalities amongst hatchery-reared larvae of Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas. was observed for the first time in France during the summer 1991 (Nicolas et al.. 1992). Since this first report, we have noted further outbreaks of the disease in the summers of 1992 and 1993 in hatcheries on the western coasts of France in which a similar virus was associated with moribund larvae. Moreover, in the summer 1991, Hine et al. (1992) described a herpes-like virus responsible for larval mortality of hatchery reared C. gigas, in New Zealand. Ail these viruses are c10sely related with respect to their size and morphology and to their apparent cellular tropism for fibroblastic cells. |

Of the 75 laboratories contacted through the survey, 54 answered, 14 of which are partially or totally devoted to mollusc diseases. In fact, only 4 laboratories are devoted full-time to this work. Of the 14 laboratories that declared to work on the diagnosis of mollusc diseases, 12 stated that they worked with mussels, 12 with oysters, 9 with clams and 8 with other mollusc species. This is coherent with available production information.
